The Suburban Commandments

Behind the facade of the suburbs, the ten commandments of the post war America still dictate behavior, conformity pretending to be the only way.

The work of this series are in two distinct suites: polaroid with mixed media (see bottom gallery) and abstract prints (see top gallery). Both series point to what shapes the place identity and group-think of the 'burbs.

The Suburban Ten Commandments series is fed from the years I lived in the neighborhoods of South Florida, Norman, Oklahoma and Dallas, Texas.  Like most of my work, the series is small in scale creating an intimate invitation for the viewer to peer over a fence and see the spaces we think of as controlled, contained and private.  The prints from this series pluck the shared patterns and shapes of groomed lawns, chlorinated pools, and cultivated gardens and reveal the light and shadow that haunt those careful spaces.
