The Story of Our Disappearing
What we consume, consumes us. What we save, saves us. What we let vanish, vanishes within us.
In 2016, the Department of the Interior listed 27 National Monuments for review with potential reduction or removal from federal protection. Shortly after this list was published, both Bears Ears and Grand Staircase / Escalante National Monuments were reduced by up to 58% of their original size, putting both cultural, historic, and archeological sites in jeopardy. In 2021, after the shift in White House Administrations, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase/Escalante were returned to their former size and are now managed by a coalition of the Tribal Nations. These places are all still in jeopardy and flux in the shifting of political sands.
This ongoing series addresses these public lands and the reality that when they are gone, we, in turn, vanish.
